On August 28, 1996, the City of Davis opened the long awaited (and long-debated) Pole Line Road overcrossing to traffic. Only time would tell whether the toads would use their brand new tunnel...
Images
The following are images that were taken around the Davis Toad Tunnel and Pole Line Road overcrossing site.

Pole Line Road Overcrossing: it is believed that the toads migrate to the drainage pond from points beyond the overcrossing. |
|

Toad Tunnel Eastern Entrance: the eastern entrance is located on the grounds of the Davis Post Office. Shortly after the opening of the overpass and toad tunnel, Toad Hollow, a public monument donated by the post office, was erected near this entrance. (See Toad Hollow images below.) |
|

Toad Tunnel Western Entrance: the western entrance is located in the drainage pond. The arrow shows where the entrance is located in the image; access to the western tunnel entrance site is limited as a result of the installation of a chain-link fence around the pond a few years ago. |
|

Toad Hollow: from left to right is a toad bar (Toadwerks, in tribute to the Sudwerks Bar and Brewery adjacent to the post office), a toad outhouse, and a toad hotel. These monuments were permanently displayed for some period following their unveiling. However, because of repeated vandalism to the Toad Hollow site, the monuments are brought back into the post office at the end of each day. |

Toad Hollow: another view. |

Toad Hollow can be seen in the background, not too far from the drive-through mailboxes that countless people use daily at the post office. |

Despite the cleverness of the Davis Toad Tunnel, occasionally dubbed "Julie's toad tunnel" by critics, it soon appeared that the toads for whom the tunnel was built were nowhere to be found.
